Week Nine
This week I learned a useful method from Professor Gleason. She prepared a handout which was a summary of notes and terms of Chapter 3 English Phonology. Arranged in a circle we discussed this handout and sometimes students looked up in our textbook for more information. It was also a preparation for the next exam. This kind of handouts shows students what kind of question they have to answer in the quiz and how. Students, who got a B+ or better in the first exam, took notes when Professor Gleason repeats the answer. When students listen carefully then they know the right answer. On the one hand I think the students have to do a lot and they will get only 3 credits for this class but on the other hand Professor Gleason makes it easy to get a good grade. The key point is they have to read each chapter and listen to Professor Gleason during the class.

Seventh Week
Seventh Week
I see how the class becomes more and more together. They are talking to each other and I recognized that we are laughing more in class. I am pretty sure that students like this class and therefore, they learn a lot more. But, I also think that the students do not like the first exam. They told that they spent hours for this exam and it was too much for them. It is true, the exam was long but they had almost five days to answer to the questions.
We watched the video about dialects. Showing videos is a good opportunity to give the class a brake. When we talk about the movie I recognized that students applied the information from our textbooks to the video. This was a proof for me that they learn in this class because applying knowledge is a proof that you understood the topic.
I also recognized that I fell comfortable to talk in class and this makes me happy. I do not feel “useless” anymore. When we talked about how to pronounce my name or when I talked about my scarf all students listen to me and I was not concerned about my English when I talked about this. After the class I recognized that it was not our topic and I had the feeling that I changed the topic. Next time I will be more careful and try to stay on our topic.

Eight Week
This week I got the chance to teach. Teaching 90 minutes is very and therefore Professor Gleason gave me the opportunity to teach the last 20 minutes of the class. I have prepared a handout with the Turkish and German alphabet and it was very easy to talk about this in front of the class. We talked about how many speech sounds has German and Turkish and I focused on the different letters. Okay, this is not really “teaching” but it helped me to feel comfortable to speak in class and just tell them what I know. The students listened to me and were interested. It was a nice feeling to know “I can do it”.
First teaching
First teaching
My lesson plan was well organized and interesting but I could not apply this lesson plan in the class. I think the reason was that I do not know enough about the topics and I was nervous and could not listen to the student’s answers. Another reason was, that this class is not my class and I do not feel free to teach in front of Prof. Gleason. I am afraid to do something wrong and to embarrassed myself.
My handouts for the students were very helpful for me and for the students understanding to the topics. Especially the first handout about descriptive and prescriptive grammar rules was a good introduction to the video about corpus linguistics because the students got the chance to learn the background knowledge. The video was short and informative and students enjoined watching the video about corpus linguistics. The handout with the questions about the video helped students to take notes.
I covered all of the material and topics, which I planned and I believe that students learned during this class my learning outcomes but they learned from the group work and video. I could not “teach” them and therefore I will try to improve my "teaching skills". I have to know more about the topic, which I teach and I have to listen to my students answers. I hope, I will not be nervous and can listen to them.

Sixth Week
Sixth Week
One of the students hand in her quiz not on time. On he one hand I think it is her mistake because she had enough time (over the weekend) and she also found time to style her hair but on he other hand I think she is young and she tries to enjoy her life. I learned always when Professors gave me another chance because I always regretted my mistakes.
In Germany I learned Phonology and it was very difficult to memorize the IPA symbols. I was worried that Professor Gleason will ask students to memorize the IPA symbols but she did not. Phonology is like to learn a new language with a new alphabet and therefore I was scarred to teach phonology.
Professor Gleason prepared a handout for the students which was a very good summary of this chapter and a good introduction to phonology without scaring students. I enjoyed this class and refreshed my knowledge about phonology. Almost all students enjoyed this class and were interested.
During the last 30 minutes I got the chance to “teach”. I prepared a handout with the Turkish and German Alphabet. We compared sound between English, German, and Turkish languages and I felt comfortable to speak to the class and listen to their questions and answers. I mean, it was very easy for me to talk about these languages and explain them.

Self-Assessment of Your First Teaching Experience
Ayse, please assess your own teaching performance by answering these questions:
1. How effective was your plan? Describe your entire teaching plan and comment on whether or not you believe that you created a sufficiently well developed plan for this lesson.
What worked well? What needs improvement?
2. What materials did you use during this teaching presentation? For example, you created a flyer that you distributed in class or you showed a video. What materials did you use? Describe them.
What worked well? What needs improvement?
3. Did you feel that your materials were effective when you used them during your class?
What worked well? What areas need improvement?
3. Student engagement: Were students sufficiently involved in your lesson? Were they paying attention? How do you know? Did they ask questions? What questions did they ask?
What worked well? What areas need improvement?
4. Did you explain concepts clearly so that students could understand them? What concepts did you explain? Comment on your presentational style during this lesson.
5. What were your original learning outcomes for this lesson? Write them out here.
6. Do you believe that student learning during this class effectively matched your learning outcomes?
What worked well? What areas need improvement?
7. Did you cover all of the material (the topics) that you planned to cover?
8. General overview of your teaching and of the lesson taught: open forum. Comment in any ways that you wish to on your own teaching. What worked well? What needs improvement?

Fifth Week
Fifth Week
I taught last week and when I think about my teaching I feel not good. I checked my handouts again and recognized that my questions were not good enough. I have to work on it. I think I have to tech something, which is more about my “skills” and maybe not for the whole class and only for 30 minutes.
I learn a lot from Professor Gleason. For example how to structure a lesson, how to plan to introduce students to a complicated and confusing topic and how to manage a classroom with students from different backgrounds (age, race, major,).
It is very interesting that students have “open book quizzes” and “take home exams”. This is very new for me and I think it is easier. I think when students want then they can get an “A ” for this class. They have to be organized and on time.
