Guide for Reading and Discussing Descriptive and Prescriptive Grammar Rules in
“Ch 2 Languages and Authority ”
Please form a small group with 3 of your classmates. Then, chose one, discussion leader, secretary, and a speaker. Write down your answers and you will also hand in your results. The speaker will present your results in class.
1. Explain why linguists or lexicographers are usually descriptivists?
2. What can we learn about the prescriptive grammar rules?
3. Explain the gap between prescriptive rules and speakers’ documented usage.
4. Explain MCKean’s Law and Deborah Cameron’s point of views to the discussion about prescriptive and descriptive rules. What are the differences?
